Concrete carbonation is approved for the first time
"The key chapter [of the IPCC report] recognizes concrete carbonization for the first time," said Richard Leese, director of industrial policy, energy and climate change at the Mineral Products Association, which represents the UK cement industry. "Now international accounting needs to be updated to take into account the carbonization of concrete so they can get the math right." However, according to recent research cited in the IPCC report, about half of the carbon produced during the calcination process is later reabsorbed by cement and concrete through a natural process called mineral carbonation. Several companies are exploring the process as a way to capture atmospheric carbon, including Australia\'s Mineral Carbonation, which has developed a way to recreate the process artificially. Other designers making use of mineral carbonation include Royal College of Art graduate Kukbong Kim, who recently unveiled a painting containing crushed concrete that absorbs carbon dioxide, and Dutch designer Teresa Van Dongen, who highlighted the carbon-capturing potential of olivine sand.
