What is Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs)?
UHTC is a class of ceramics with exceptional stability at temperatures exceeding 2000 degC. It has been investigated for use in thermal protection systems, coatings to protect materials from high temperatures, as well as bulk material heating elements.
The AIR Force Materials Laboratory funded the development of a high-temperature material in the early 60s to meet the needs of the aerospace industry. This new material was designed to withstand hypersonic aircraft, such as the Boeing X-. UHTCs that are being studied for TPS include titanium carbide, titanium nitride, thorium dioxide and other composites.
Diborides are characterized by a lower melting point and higher thermal conductivity compared to carbides and Nitrides. This gives them a good thermal shock resistance, and makes them suitable for many high temperature thermal applications.
